You’ll also find all you need to know on transportation, shopping, and must-see spots. By the time you finish reading, you’ll be able to navigate and fully enjoy the vast Umeda area with confidence!

The History of Umeda & The Story Behind Its Name

Umeda’s roots date back to the Edo period (1603-1867). Originally, this entire area was a wetland, and soil was piled up on the land to create rice fields, giving it the name Umeda, written “埋田” or “filled-in land” (rather than “梅田,” plum field, as it’s written today). Later, it’s said there was a place at Tsunashikiten Shrine named “Umezuka” after the plums (“ume”) beloved by Sugawara no Michizane, an ancient scholar and poet enshrined there as the god Tenjin-sama. The original character “埋” for “bury” or “fill in” was considered unlucky, which was another reason it was finally changed to the character for plum, which has the same phonetic reading, resulting, it’s said, in the name Umeda.

In the Meiji period (1868–1912), railways were introduced and JR Osaka Station was established. Soon after, lines such as Hanshin Railway and Hankyu Railway began operating, transforming Umeda into the largest transportation hub in western Japan. With the addition of high-rise buildings, department stores, large shopping malls, and an extensive underground shopping network, Umeda evolved into the massive urban center it is today, with transport, fashion, dining, business, and overnight accommodation all in one place.
